The Devotional – Search the Scriptures – 129

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:  Luke 10:38-42
Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, tell her to help me. And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.  “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES: Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah
The certain village is Bethany, the home town of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, although Lazarus is not mentioned here. Also, none of the other gospel writers refer to this meeting. I find it a bit confusing that the writers of the other gospels are silent as they travel to Jerusalem, perhaps they are trying to understand His words found in Luke 9:43-45, looking at verse 44 we read “Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”

It would be conjecture on my part to seek to understand the apostles and the disciple's state of mind as they travel to Jerusalem. Mark is a young man who is related to Barnabas, these are but two of several more who are with Jesus at this time. But Luke, who states in his first chapter that as a historian he purposely set out to explain the Ministry of the Messiah; that is to write out an orderly account of all that Jesus did from eyewitnesses. We see Luke’s confirmation of this later in his second book, the book of Acts.

Mary has chosen the good part (just what is the good part?) It is FAITH, faith is the substance of things hope for and faith is the evidence of things not seen. Mary saw Jesus as her LORD, Martha saw Jesus through the eyes of a good Jewish woman. Religiously she ministered as she was taught by her Jewish traditions.

There is a lesson in this for all of us, that is, we work at being pleasing to God. Ever ask yourself the question? “If I am working at trying to be GOOD for God, then why do I feel that I need to do more?” We cannot do enough of anything for God, He has done it all for us. For without faith it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God. When we express faith in God through Christ, we are spiritually sitting and listening to Jesus who is the Author of Faith in God. God will then be pleased to work through us to produce good works. Works that glorify Him and bless us.

A Devotional – SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES (17)  COMMENT: Looking a little deeper! The cause of the flood that covered the entire surface of the earth, resulted; apart from the families of Adam and Seth. The families of unrighteous Cain also was multiplying. Cain went out (away) from the LORD; See Genesis 4:16-26. I want to note that the man Lamech in Cain’s family, is not the Lamech who begot Noah of Methuselah’s family who is of the Adam family.
