1 Peter 2:11-12 – Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Submission to Government

1 Peter 2:13-17 – Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

Jesus, the Christ, God’s Messiah

In chapter 1, the apostle Peter reminds and exhorts his readers/disciples of our heavenly position, our inheritance, and our conduct, both before the world and God our Father. As Living Stones, we are called to abide in position with the Chief Cornerstone. Notice what Isaiah says about the Cornerstone, Isaiah 28:16 – Therefore thus says LORD GOD: “Behold I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone (tested), a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily.

When we are abiding in Christ and experiencing the joys of being in Christ, from the flesh, we tend to react in ways that express hast or emotional bursts of giddiness, sadness, or anger. As a child of God, we are reminded by the apostle to remain in position as a part of the whole building. A building of faith hope and love and not at the unfaithful person who acts like one, with a foot out of joint. Proverbs 19:25 – Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble Is like a bad tooth and a foot out of joint.

We have a very wonderful fellowship with God, this ought to carry over in our dealings with the government too. Government is an institution by God for mankind to live peacefully with each other. See the apostle Paul’s comments on human government; chapter 13:1-7. As a child of God, we are challenged  through the wisdom of the Word, to monitor our conduct before the world; both the saved and the unsaved need to see in us a GOOD character. By observation of our good works who works in and through us, which all observe, these will glorify God in the judgment, or day of visitation.
