Submission to Government and Employers

1 Peter 2:13-25 – Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. Servants be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Jesus, the Christ, God’s Messiah

In chapter 1, the apostle Peter reminds and exhorts his readers/disciples of our heavenly position, our inheritance, and our conduct, both before the world and God our Father. As Living Stones, we are called to abide in position with the Chief Cornerstone. Notice what Isaiah says about the Cornerstone, Isaiah 28:16 – Therefore thus says LORD GOD: “Behold I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone (tested), a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily.

Submission sounds like a repulsive word to most of us, but God calls us to be submissive. To submit to any ordinance of government, or to any order from an authority such as a boss or manager at work, most of us rebel, argue or have an opinion that rubs ‘humbug’ into an otherwise normal operation. So what does the word humbug actually mean? It means to add hypocrisy! For example; if I see government wrongfully at work and I apply my two cents worth; I am the humbug (hypocrite). If I am at work and I am told to do something and I complain, I am the humbug (hypocrite).

These days, most people do not take anything patiently, we sound and act like a mad dog, barking and complaining about every deed or task we are called to do. Even if we are not involved, but hear about something that rattles our ‘humbug’ we often sound worse than the mad dog, sounding more like a ravenous starving wolf.

Are we more superior over the matters of living before the God ordained government, or are we more knowledgeable than someone we work for? If so then, we should cut chapter 2 and verses 21 through 25 out of the 1st epistle of the apostle Peter.
These are serious days that we live in, each of us should seek to search our souls. This humbug, not only is destroying our country and our work ethics, but it is also is destroying the Divine Institution of Marriage,
