The Chosen Stone and His Chosen People
1 Peter 2:4-10 – Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame. “Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone, “And” A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Jesus, the Christ, God’s Messiah

The cornerstone is the first stone SET in the construction of a masonry building, it is usually marked. All of the other stones will be set in position to this stone. The stone will also be positional in that the building's position of N. S. E. or W. will also be determined. It may take several attempts for the mason to choose the right cornerstone for his project.

In our context, that God chose for mankind a perfect Cornerstone, this is God’s choice of THEE Cornerstone (The Christ/Messiah) which was offered to man to restore the kingdom of God to the original state of perfect Righteousness (Genesis 2:8-25). Man in his fallen state of sin rejected God’s Cornerstone by seeking to establish his own righteousness (Romans 1:18-32), which reveals God’s wrath on human righteousness steeped in sin and evil.

We who are children of God who believe the scripture (are becoming like Jesus who is the Living Cornerstone) as  living stones we are indeed rejected by the unrighteous world around us, but God who is rich in mercy is building us up to the standard of His grace : 1 John 3:2 – Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
Psalm 118:22-24 – The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD’s doing;

It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
God has called us to be happy, to rejoice and to be glad in the midst of a perverse world. The generation in which we live is steeped in sin and evil. Do we have the option to blend in? No, we do not have that option – See Romans 6:1-14. Therefore, we should always be looking to Jesus. Hebrews 12:2 – looking unto Jesus, the author, and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
