The Old Testament Scriptures are opened and the apostles understand.

Luke 24:44-49 – Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, “and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. “And you are witnesses of these things. “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah
As we approach the final words of Luke’s gospel, I am reminded that the LORD Jesus desires that everyone (all mankind) to be saved disciples of God. There are many saved by the grace of God and in this we give thanks, but there are not many disciples. Now, this is an important subject that many ‘Christians’ fail to comprehend. John 8:31 – Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. If you and I do not abide in the Word of God we will fail to be a disciple of Jesus, the apostle John provides chapters 15 and 16 of his gospel to record the LORD’s discourse on abiding in the Vine.

Luke’s charge regarding discipleship is found in Luke 24:45 – And He (Jesus) opened their understanding, that they (His disciples) might comprehend the Scriptures. Many believers fail to comprehend the scriptures simply because the churches they attend to do not teach the truth to “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker (disciple) who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15). There are several sections in the gospels that are directly pointing you and me to discipleship. Luke 6:46-49, Matthew 6:24; Matthew 13:1-23. The church cannot make you a disciple of Christ, discipleship is a personal choice, just as salvation is.

Finally, there are three phases to salvation. (1) Salvation Justified by Jesus – Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. (2) Salvation Sanctified by Jesus – John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. These will go and fulfill Luke 24:47–48. This does not mean that we all must be missionaries, but that Jesus through His Word and the work of God the Holy Spirit provides for all of us to be evangelists. And finally (3) Glorified by Jesus – Romans 8:30.

Allowing Christ to sanctify us is the most important aspect of being saved by grace through faith in Jesus, Note! Jesus prayed for His disciples, John 17:16-20“I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. “They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. “And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
