The Disciples’ Spiritual Eyes are Opened

Luke 24:28-35 – Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them. Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah

John 8:31 – Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. Yesterday we observed some of the attributes of our LORD the Messiah. There is one of those contemporary songs that goes like this: “What a God we serve, heaven and earth adore Him, angels bow before Him” and so on and on it goes since these are the entire words of the song. There is a large failure in Christendom today, it is similar to the “great gulf FIXED” in the days when Jesus spoke of the ‘rich’ man and ‘Lazarus’ (Luke 16:19-31). Let me explain! Jesus calls His disciples to abide in Him, not to serve Him. If we abide in Him, He will abide in us and we will serve together. John 15:1-8.

As Jesus sat at the table with the two disciples, ‘they served Him’ as they served Him, ‘they observed Him’ as they observed Him ‘they recognized Him’ and as He blessed the food, ‘He vanished from them’. Then their eyes were opened and they KNEW HIM! This truth burns in my heart every time I read it, when the eyes of my soul are opened, I go blind physically and come alive spiritually. Like a burst of fresh air! My wife and I were sitting out on the patio last evening before the storm came through. As the winds began to increase, I reflected on abiding with my wife and our love for each other. The world and all of the conflicts of life melt in these moments of time. In the same manner, Jesus only needs a moment like this to direct us to abide in Him.

Likewise, as I just hurried to you and explained this personal moment with my wife last evening, the disciples of Jesus, already a bit exhausted from their journey from Jerusalem, ran back! No doubt in the dark to Jerusalem to tell to the apostles and disciples present, about their encounter with the ‘risen LORD’ and as they, saying “The LORD is risen indeed!” You betcha! Confirming what Simon (Peter) had explained to the group earlier was true. Jesus is Risen! Then as they had the attention of the eleven, they explained what had happened on the road to Emmaus and that He was not known to them until the breaking of bread.
