The Devotional – Search the Scriptures – 212

Luke 22:35-38 – And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?” So they said, “Nothing.” Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. “For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end. ”So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah
This passage is not recorded in any of the other gospels, but I believe it is important since it falls within the last personal conversations that Jesus has with the eleven (Judas has left the group to betray the Messiah). Taking an excerpt from the commentary of Dr. Tom Constable we read – Luke probably included this part of Jesus' conversation with His disciples, because it is a sober warning to all disciples of our need for personal spiritual preparation. We all face essentially what the Eleven did. We must not rely on physical defenses in spiritual warfare but make responsible preparations by arming ourselves with the resources that only God can provide (cf. Eph. 6:10-20). Very soon, the disciples would be sleeping in Gethsemane when they should have been praying (vv. 40, 46). Similarly, we often fail to ask God to help us, and instead rely on our own resources.

While the statement in Luke 22:35-38 may seem confusing or unimportant, Luke thought differently! The final events and words of Jesus to and with His disciples are very important. As important as the Apostle Peter’s final comments to the Church. Note: (2 Peter 112-15) Therefore, I will not be negligent to remind you always of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth. Yes, I think it is right, as long as I in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our LORD Jesus Christ showed. Moreover, I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.

One other thought regarding Luke 22:37. Facing death and the Father’s Will, Jesus reminds His apostles and us disciples that we must face spiritual wickedness, ‘head-on’. Because all things in this world are accomplished by the world in the flesh. We are not of this world and like Jesus, the things concerning Him have and end and so do the things concerning us. Our mission in Christ will have an ending, stay focused and glorify God as this will be a blessing to all those who are watching and our reward will be hearing the words of the LORD Himself – “Well Done, good and faithful servant!”
