The Devotional – Search the Scriptures –199

Luke 20:42 – 47 – And He said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? “Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” “Therefore, David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?” Beware of the Scribes! Then in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, “who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah

If one desires a position of teacher, preacher, prophet, or priest regarding the scripture, they desire a good work in the written and Holy Word of God. The apostle Paul states that these MEN desire a good work (1 Timothy 3:1). One who oversees the Holy Word of God is called in scripture a Bishop. This is a serious matter to consider for all who seek a position of authority or leadership with God’s people.

So, when Jesus Christ/Messiah is speaking on the subject of; “How can King David call the Messiah His LORD, when He, the Messiah is an offspring of David;” see Matthew 1. Should it not be the other way around? Should not Jesus be calling David, lord! It matters not, that Jesus is 28 generations from King David’s reign over Israel, Jesus is still a son of David. What helps us to understand the words of Jesus here in Luke, or for that matter; how do we understand Jesus at all?

The answer to this question and the warning of Jesus to the people and the scribes who are listening, (by the way are you listening? They that have an ear will hear!) is found in Matthew 22:43-45. He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the BY THE SPIRIT, call Him LORD? For he says, “The LORD, said to my Lord; Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” If then David calls Him LORD, how can He be His son?

Jesus states clearly that the warning He gives to both the scribe and the listener is serious. Proper interpretation of God’s Word is available only when people are willing to speak and hear by the will of God via the Holy Spirit of God. For this glorifies God and not man. Sadly, many today find themselves dusting off the dross from their own shoulder, saying “What a good job I did!” It is the default of the flesh and all of us who speak of what we think we know about the scripture must be careful to keep the dross where it belongs and via the Holy Spirit, give God the Glory!
