Luke 20:1-8 – Now it happened on one of those days, as He taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, that the chief priests and the scribes, together with the elders, confronted Him and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Or who is he who gave You this authority?” But He answered and said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and answer Me: “The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?” And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him? “But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” So, they answered that they did not know where it was from. And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah
It is the last week before the Messiah offers His Life a ransom for many, the days move quickly, it is already Tuesday, but the LORD’s routine does not change. The Messiah is THE Preacher of the gospel, and THE Teacher of Righteousness, people are listening, and people are being saved. Those saved are entering into the kingdom of heaven at hand. Those rejecting are building a case for Messiah’s death by seeking to destroy His Character. Luke writes, of these religious leaders, “by what authority (small case ‘a’) are You doing these things? Or, who is he (small case ‘h’) who gave You this authority?

How I understand that the translators of the Word of God in various other Bible ‘translations’ do not capitalize the pronouns that are a direct reference to Jesus, or God the Father, and it may be the case here that human translators of the NKJV have caused confusion in my mind over this event at the Temple. Yet, I believe it is worthy to consider, that even in these last days before the Messiah’s life ends, that religious piety remains blind to the Authority standing in front of them. In John 8:42-44, Jesus reveals to the religious authorities the reason for their lack of trust in Him, we will look a verse (43). “Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. (44a) You are of your father the devil…”

People who respond to religion are self-righteousness, they do not have the capacity to listen to the Word of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18-2:1-11 reveals that the mind without the Spirit of God has no capacity for TRUTH. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit is standing before the chief priest, the scribes and the elders (John 1:33 and John 10:30), but these do not have faith in God. Hebrew 11:6 – But without faith, it is impossible to please Him (God) for he who comes to God MUST believe that HE IS and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.
