Luke 17:5-10 – And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” So, the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. “And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’? “But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’? “Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. “So likewise, you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’”

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah

Faith is not a duty or a work, faith is a personal exercise or reaction of the human will! Notice Hebrews 11:1-3 – Now faith is the substance (personal realization) of things hoped for, the evidence (personal confidence) of things not seen. By faith, we (personally) understand that the worlds (ages) were framed by the Word of God so that the things which are seen were not made with things which are visible. Religion and works cannot provide a faith in God that is strong enough to cast a grain of sand (.) into the sea. However, personal faith in God, being the size of a (.) mustard seed is all that is needed to replace personal works of doubt with personal trust and confidence.

The duty of a servant is to accomplish the master's will, “By faith, Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain. Abel’s faith came from an understanding that God formed the world by His Word, Abel’s faith in God is an ongoing testimony that is as real today as it was on the day when God recognized the excellent (personal) faith sacrifice of Abel and rejected the (works-based) actions of Cain. Even though Abel and Cain are dead for at least the last six thousand the results of their personal reaction to God are evidence of where their beliefs rested.

Trust and believe are the same as faith! The ‘Common Greek’ words are of the same root ‘pistis’ if we fail to trust or believe that God’s Word is true and that He will provide, we are like the servant’s expectation and response to the master in the parable of Luke 17:5-10, it was unprofitable because of obedience to “duty” rather than a personal action of “trust or believe”.
