The Devotional – Search the Scriptures – 134

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:  Luke 11:9-13
“So, I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. “If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? “Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES: Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah
Jesus asks three rhetorical questions to these disciples who are presently following Him. The questions are like a flashing billboard that draws attention to persons as they pass by. Before we get to these questions, we ought to look at verses 9 and 10. The parable of the friend who shows up at midnight to borrow food is connected to this section; in other words, this section is a continuing conversation on prayer from another point of view. “So, I say to you” connects verses 5 through 8 to 9 through 13.

Disciples are learners, the Greek word “mathetes” is the same word for “learner” in English. If you are a child of God the Father through faith in the Person and accomplishment of Jesus Christ on the cross for your personal forgiveness of sin, then you are a disciple. You are being tutored by the Living word of God every time to study. Every time you study you are knocking and seeking, every time you pray you are asking. If you do not study the Word of God, you remain saved, but you are not a disciple.

In our church fellowship, our Adult Sunday School class is on the following subject – “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make NO provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts – Romans 13-14. Another way to say this is to walk in Christ or abide in Christ (John 15:1-8). The content or volume of this study is Spirituality and it encompasses all dispensations of time. 1Co 2:15 – But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.

In our dispensation of “church,” we do not have to ask for the Holy Spirit. When we become saved or regenerated by the grace of God, God the Father gives each child the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:10-16). Old Testament saints (children of God the Father) were required to “ask” for the Holy Spirit, New Testament saints, at the point of being saved are permanently given the Holy Spirit.

Raising a lot of questions, I suppose; but I know that if you ask anything regarding the work of the Holy Spirit in His Name (Jesus) God the Father is obligated to answer. God the Father is seriously sincere about your personal relationship with Him, the question is are you seriously sincere about your relationship with God through Christ?
