Christ’s Example to Be Followed

1 Peter 5:5-11 – Submit to God, Resist the Devil

Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus, the Christ, God’s Messiah

As Peter closes out his 1st Epistle, he strongly encourages the younger men and women of the church to be submissive (humble). Then he adds an afterthought; also, all of you be submissive to ‘one another’ clothed in humility ‘tender-hearted’. Being submissive to the elders, deacons and to each other IS a two-sided coin, is it not? Most of God’s children are clothed in humility! Is this a true statement? Yes, our outer garments of humility are always bright, cheerful and even helpful, but on the inside where no one can see, we are a TOUGH old bird, with a puffed-up hardened chest of critical, damning thoughts.

So many of us today live in a compromised faith, what I mean is that God has granted us salvation, we have the heavenly inheritance that the apostle writes of in 1 Peter 1:3-12. Our souls are purified since we obeyed in sincere truth in the Spirit and love for one another. As the apostle continues in chapter one. He writes; “having been born again, not of perishable seed, but imperishable. Chapter 1:22-23. Our flesh is perishable is like the grass of the field, it will perish and the apostle reminds his readers of Isaiah’s message. Our human flesh is like the grass of the field, it will perish, so stop living in the flesh and live in the Word of God, which like the Holy Spirit in us, lives and abides forever.

A prideful or proud heart is not ‘biblical’, God resists the proud, but He gives GRACE, to the tenderhearted, therefore ‘humble’ yourself under the all-powerful hand of God and He will lift up your soul because He cares for you. His care for you and your prayers will not be answered, nor will you find comfort. When you give place to the devil, the roaring lion goes around back-biting and devouring the children of God with YOUR mouth.
