Luke 23:44-49The King on the Cross
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly, this was a righteous man. And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah
The reaction of Creation resulting from the death of the Creator, when Jesus gave up His spirit and breathed His last physical breath, is a moment in the History of Creation that was no small thing! “The earth quaked, and darkness covered the daylight” If you have ever witnessed the death of a loved one you know that your body quakes within and grief covers your mind in darkness. And ever so often when you are reminded of that death, the tremors return and the dark clouds of remembering return; Romans 8:21-22 help us to understand this.
There are many on that day who realized that Jesus was and is RIGHTEOUS and that His death was NECESSARY to bring SALVATION, to deliver the world from darkness. To the Centurion (who was in charge of the crucifixion) and to the crowd (cloud) of witnesses, including men like Joseph of Arimathea, a council member of the Jews and Nicodemus a Jewish ruler. The quake of all creation mourns, and even today, you and I witness the tremors of His Death, the sin of man is the quake, it is are loud and clear, and every tremor points directly to Jesus and His death.
Yes, but the events of this day at Calvary do not end the story of Jesus, do they? We have a Risen Messiah, He is alive. Follow along as we look at the Messiah’s victory over the grave. The LORD’s vicarious act of love is for you and me to accept and believe, once we do the tremors of darkness will diminish and the Light of the grace of God will appear as the quake of sin and death loses its grip on our personal new life in Christ.
