The Devotional – Search the Scriptures – 200

Luke 21:1-6    And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So, He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; “for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.” Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said, “These things which you see—the days will come in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah

While seeking to walk through the gospel of Luke, to understand bits and pieces of the Life of Jesus Christ, I know that anyone who attempts this will, feel “small and overwhelmed” as I often do. It does not matter that someone has a Master or Associate degree in theology, or no degree at all! And, it does not matter if you have the entire Word of the Old Testament memorized. (The Messiah lived, died and rose from the dead within the scriptures of the covenant promises of God, given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob). Now, don’t get this wrong, I am not talking about “covenant theology” as pushed by some pastors today.

Jesus is God and yet, He is human and sinless. This, to all other sinful humans; educated or not, is beyond comprehension. To carry this one step further; Jesus is God’s Son, the Lamb, who is, who was and who will always be the LAMB who was sacrificed for the SIN of the world. How do we know this? We know and believe this by FAITH, faith in God and His LAMB. In all of this – Jesus never fails to help us recall that we are, without HIM - HELPLESS!

Riches and poverty mean much to people – just ask them! In contrast; riches and poverty mean ‘nothing’ to God. God has all riches and all poverty as it all belongs to HIM. Can you imagine in your mind, Jesus who laid all of what belongs to Him ASIDE, and observe the poor widow to give all that she had? Faith in God His Father moved Jesus to obey His Father’s Will and die and rise again. This same personal faith is seen by the LORD Jesus in this woman who gave all she has to the will of God. Although the circumstances are different, this poor widow reminds me of Esther, “if I perish, I perish”! (Esther 4:16)

Many of the disciples must not have understood what the LORD Jesus was seeking to teach them about ‘faith being much more valuable than riches’ as their attention was drawn to the beauty of the temple. Mankind always looks at the outward appearances of things, this is why religion and status in life are so important to most people. What we see on earth is temporal, what we believe on earth through religion is; also, temporal. However, Jesus says – “Do not let your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.” John 14:1. Let your faith in God increase and what you value in life will blossom!
