Luke 18:35-43 – Then it happened, as He was coming near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging. And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant. So, they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. And he cried out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” So, Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to Him. And when he had come near, He asked him, saying, “What do you want Me to do for you?” He said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.” Then Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah

The meeting with the blind man Bartimaeus is NOT coincidental, earlier in the day Jesus spoke to his disciples/apostles about His death and resurrection. These men heard the words of the LORD, not just then, but two other times. They had ears to hear, but they were not willing to receive what they heard. When Jesus was speaking to the multitudes about John the Baptizer, we in Luke 11:14-15 “And if you are willing to receive it, (speaking of John the Baptizer) he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears, let him hear!”

Now listen, blind Bartimaeus had ears, but no eyes, however; he was ‘by faith’ able to see JESUS, the son of David. This statement of Bartimaeus takes us all the way back to Zacharias prophecy in Luke 1:69 – And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David. And Luke 3:32 - …the son of Nathan, the son of David. The genealogy of Jesus Christ was important to Bartimaeus as he knew and understood that Jesus the Son of David is the MESSIAH, he was waiting for the horn of salvation to pass his way and when Jesus did, it was his faith in the Word of God from the prophets and priests that Jesus saw in the blind man, and in seeing this Jesus says in Luke 18:42 “receive your sight; your faith has made you whole.” Bartimaeus chose followed Jesus, if you are saved may I ask! “Are you following Jesus by faith” or something else like works?” If by faith then you hear and SEE, if by works, then you are like the disciples in this passage, you see but you do not HEAR!
