Luke 14:25-33 – Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. “And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—“lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, “saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ “Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? “Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. “So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

Jesus, the Christ of God/Messiah
This is a very interesting Sabbath day in the Pharisee’s home, remember it began with the LORD healing the man with ‘dropsy’! Maybe you know what dropsy is, but for those of us who do not know; dropsy is an accumulation of fluid in the body causing swelling under the skin, it is a very painful (edema).

As with most food gatherings today the conversations would be so many and so intense that we would only hear a person or two in our immediate area of the table. I believe it is important to know that the LORD Jesus held the attention of all who were present at this meal. From the host on, everyone was intensely listening to the Messiah. Jesus was not the guest speaker, yet He commanded the attention of everyone. Should we not find this AMAZING?

Yes, I agree that the LORD was being watched closely in order to find fault with Him and His ministry, but no fault was found which leads us to the statement of Luke 14:25 – Now a great multitude went with Him, And He turned and said to them. Many of the guests at the Pharisees home followed Jesus and at that time heard some startling news. Hate father and mother, brothers, sisters, and even one’s own life? What kind of statement is this? Bear my own cross, what does all of this mean?

This is no Sunday School message to or for children; this is a message to the hardened hearts of men and women in the adult stages of life. Men and women who have experienced the abuse and circumstances of living a life without the knowledge of the One True God. People today are no different, we carry on in the traditions and bondages of family. We may say in our soul “Bah Humbug!” to this. Yet, just as in the days when The Messiah spoke to those following Him, we know that there is nothing new under the sun.

Confessing Jesus as Savior and LORD means that we are willing to bear what lies ahead. The cross (death); Of course, should this be God’s will! But, what about a father or mother who threatens to disown us for our faith in the Messiah, or a brother or sister who mocks or does worse because we have decided to follow Jesus? 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new. At your earliest convenience please read 2 Corinthians 4:1-18.
