SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:  Luke 9:1-6
Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece. “Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.  “And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”

[When churches seek to apply the events of Luke 9:1-6 and other related events to the current church age disciplines, these leaderships are out of line and should be shunned by New Testament saints.]

After making this statement a few days ago, my cousin in Kentucky asked me to clarify the statement because I confused him and no doubt many others too. I have taken a deeper look as to what I was thinking and studied some commentary of those whom I trust. I should have looked at the commentary of others before lashing out at local churches, yet there are churches in the universal church that suffer from deception.

In the seventies and eighties, there were a lot of deceptive practices in churches all across Canada and the United States. There is no need to go into detail since details will sometimes mislead the children of God and tempt them away from Truth. My statement last week assumed that everyone reading understood the context of my thoughts, that to say the least was selfish and lacking the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

So, what is Luke 9:1-6 teaching the church? Dr. Tom Constable explains that the LORD equipped the disciples with His Power, who in chapter 9 became “apostles” or the other word for apostle is “missionary” Dr. Constable quoted from Luke  9:10 – This transitional verse marks the end of the special mission of the Twelve (vv. 1-6). Luke now calls them "apostles" (missionaries) again (cf. 6:13), probably in anticipation of their ministry in Acts as Jesus' authorized representatives. They reported to Jesus as their authority (cf. Acts 14:26-28). Jesus then took them privately to the region of "Bethsaida" Julius, for rest (Mark 6:31) and for further instruction. This town stood near the northeast shore of Lake Galilee, just east of the Jordan River.

If you have followed the life of any missionary by personal contact, or of reading a biography or autobiography, you will see the power of Jesus abiding in these missionaries like those of the disciples/apostles recorded in Luke 9:1-6.
